Basic terms
- Natal Chart 原局Your birth moment written out as eight characters. That set is your chart.
- Day Master 日干The top character of your birth day. In the chart it stands for you.
- Hidden Stems 支藏干A smaller character tucked inside a lower character.
- Ten Gods 十星A read on what role each other character plays for you.
- Twelve Life Stages 十二運星A read on which stage your own force sits at in that seat.
- Symbolic Stars 神殺An old nickname given to certain character pairs.
- Luck Pillars 大運A larger stretch that turns over every ten years.
- Annual Luck 歲運The grain of one year, changing as the year changes.
- Solar Term Boundary 節入The moment a solar term opens. The month turns over right here.
- True Solar Time Adjustment 眞太陽時Clock time moved toward the sun's position, using the birthplace longitude and the equation of time for the date.
- Late and Early Zi Hour 夜子時·朝子時How a birth after eleven at night gets handled.
- Five Elements 五行Five kinds of pull: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.
- Yin and Yang 陰陽One side reaches outward, the other takes in.

- Companion 比肩A seat just like you. It reads as the pull to stand on your own.

Twelve Life Stages
- Sprouting 長生A stage just born and starting to grow.
- Bathing 沐浴A washing and grooming stage. Footing is still easy to shake.
- Dressing 冠帶A stage of dressing up and getting ready to step out.
- Standing 建祿A stage of standing on your own and carrying your share.
- Peak 帝旺The stage where the pull has risen highest.
- Easing 衰A stage that eases off the peak and slows down.
- Resting 病A stage where the pull softens and takes a rest.
- Stilling 死A stage where outward movement comes to a stop.
- Storing 墓A stage of drawing the pull inward and storing it.
- Severing 絶A stage cut off once, before it links up again.
- Conceiving 胎A stage where a new pull first takes hold.
- Nurturing 養A stage of quiet raising before stepping outside.
