Direct Resource正印

Also called Direct Seal

The side that grows while learning and being looked after.

What Direct Resource means

Direct Resource comes from the element that feeds the Day Master, with the opposite polarity. Its yang and yin sides pair up to hold you gently from below, so it is often compared to a mother's care. Older writings also call it insu, a word for an official's seal together with its cord, which brings to mind qualifications and learning that others recognise. That is why Direct Resource is consulted for study built up step by step, a dependable and sheltering setting, and a generous readiness to take in what others say.

The characters 正印

  • 正upright, proper (Korean reading: jeong)
  • 印seal, stamp (Korean reading: in)

An upright seal: formal recognition and trustworthy support behind you.

How Direct Resource is found

Look to the element that produces the Day Master, one step before it in the producing cycle, and choose the character of opposite polarity. A yang Wood Day Master takes yin Water as Direct Resource. Branches call for a second look. A branch classed as yang on the surface is treated as yin when its main hidden stem is yin, and the branch column of the table is filled in on that basis.

Characters that count as Direct Resource for each Day Master
Day MasterStemsBranches (by main hidden stem)
甲 (Jia)癸 (Gui)子 (Zi)
乙 (Yi)壬 (Ren)亥 (Hai)
丙 (Bing)乙 (Yi)卯 (Mao)
丁 (Ding)甲 (Jia)寅 (Yin)
戊 (Wu)丁 (Ding)午 (Wu)
己 (Ji)丙 (Bing)巳 (Si)
庚 (Geng)己 (Ji)丑 (Chou), 未 (Wei)
辛 (Xin)戊 (Wu)辰 (Chen), 戌 (Xu)
壬 (Ren)辛 (Xin)酉 (You)
癸 (Gui)庚 (Geng)申 (Shen)

Each branch is judged by its main hidden stem alone. The Day Master itself is the point of comparison, so it is not counted.

Reading Direct Resource in a chart

An evenly placed Direct Resource describes someone who enjoys the process of learning for its own sake. A relaxed way of accepting help and handing it on to others is also read from it. Very many of them can mean thinking gets ahead of doing, and the reading suggests pairing it with small concrete steps. A chart without Direct Resource can be seen as strongly self-reliant, learning by trying things firsthand.

An example of Direct Resource

In a chart whose Day Master is 甲 (Jia), Direct Resource is the stem 癸 (Gui) and the branch 子 (Zi). 子 is shown as a yang branch, yet the stem it hides as its main one is 癸, a yin stem, so its polarity differs from yang 甲.

Common misreadings of Direct Resource

  • A common idea

Direct Resource means top grades at school.

    How we read it

It is not a sign of marks or of passing an exam. This service reads it as your attitude to learning and your capacity to take things in.

Where schools differ

Taking 子 (Zi) as yang by its surface class would make it Indirect Resource for a 甲 (Jia) Day Master, but this service follows its yin main stem 癸 (Gui) and reads it as Direct Resource. The same chart can show different Indirect and Direct Resource counts depending on this choice. Some books also use insu for the whole Resource group, Indirect Resource included.
