Direct Officer正官

The side that sits easy inside a set role.

What Direct Officer means

Direct Officer comes from the element that keeps the Day Master in check, carrying the opposite polarity. Because the yang and yin sides interlock, the restraint governs without going too far, and that is how it came to be called the upright office. In earlier times an official post was the same thing as a place in society. So Direct Officer has been used to look at rules and order, the role you take on, and standing that others recognise. Self-discipline and the trust earned by keeping your word are seen as part of its nature as well.

The characters 正官

  • 正upright, proper (Korean reading: jeong)
  • 官official post, officer (Korean reading: gwan)

An upright office: a duty rightfully held and the good name that comes with it.

How Direct Officer is found

Find the element that controls the Day Master, then take its member of opposite polarity. Water overcomes Fire, so a yin Fire Day Master has yang Water as Direct Officer. Some branches are classed yin on the surface yet hold a yang main hidden stem, so this service goes by the main hidden stem throughout. Each of the ten Day Masters has one stem that serves as its Direct Officer.

Characters that count as Direct Officer for each Day Master
Day MasterStemsBranches (by main hidden stem)
甲 (Jia)辛 (Xin)酉 (You)
乙 (Yi)庚 (Geng)申 (Shen)
丙 (Bing)癸 (Gui)子 (Zi)
丁 (Ding)壬 (Ren)亥 (Hai)
戊 (Wu)乙 (Yi)卯 (Mao)
己 (Ji)甲 (Jia)寅 (Yin)
庚 (Geng)丁 (Ding)午 (Wu)
辛 (Xin)丙 (Bing)巳 (Si)
壬 (Ren)己 (Ji)丑 (Chou), 未 (Wei)
癸 (Gui)戊 (Wu)辰 (Chen), 戌 (Xu)

Each branch is judged by its main hidden stem alone. The Day Master itself is the point of comparison, so it is not counted.

Reading Direct Officer in a chart

People say a steadily placed Direct Officer marks someone who builds trust inside a set framework. Doing your part within a team or a community brings a sense of reward, and the reading adds that easing your own standards now and then is fine. Without Direct Officer, the reading is a strength for making your own road free of fixed frames. When a Luck Pillar brings it, treat the period as one where roles and duties come into sharper focus.

An example of Direct Officer

Given a 丁 (Ding) Day Master, Direct Officer is the stem 壬 (Ren) plus the branch 亥 (Hai). 亥 is listed as a yin branch, but its main hidden stem 壬 is yang, which is opposite to yin 丁.

Common misreadings of Direct Officer

  • A common idea

You need Direct Officer to do well at a job.

    How we read it

It is not used as a condition for success at work. This service describes a trait of keeping to rules and carrying a role through, and it does not pick a career for anyone.

  • A common idea

The more Direct Officer, the better.

    How we read it

Some readings hold that many of the same character stack standards on top of each other and can pull you too tight. This service does not take a count alone as proof of anything good.

Where schools differ

Going by the surface class, 亥 (Hai) is yin and would be Indirect Officer for a 丁 (Ding) Day Master. This service takes the main hidden stem of 亥, which is 壬 (Ren) and yang, and so reads it as Direct Officer.
