Annual Luck歲運

The grain of one year, changing as the year changes.

What Annual Luck means

Annual Luck lays each year's stem-branch pair over your chart. Just as 2026 is known as the yang Fire Horse year, every year carries a pair, and that pair is its Annual Luck, used to see which themes draw near that year. If Luck Pillars are the ten-year backdrop, Annual Luck is closer to weather that changes from one year to the next against it. Readings therefore usually stack three layers: the Natal Chart at the base, the current Luck Pillar above it, and Annual Luck on top, read in that order.

The characters 歲運

  • 歲year, age (Korean reading: se)
  • 運to carry, to turn (Korean reading: un)

The luck of a year: the pair that newly arrives every twelve months.

How Annual Luck is found

The Annual Luck pair is the same as that year's Year Pillar, and it follows the sixty-year cycle counted from 1984, a yang Wood year over the Rat branch. Its year begins at the Start of Spring (Lichun) boundary, not on 1 January or at the lunar new year. Your results show ten years, from two years before the current one to seven after, with a Ten Gods label for each stem and branch. Before the Start of Spring, a note explains that last year's pair is still running.

Reading Annual Luck in a chart

Think of Annual Luck as the layer showing which characters are added over the chart and the Luck Pillar. Readings often take the year stem's Ten Gods role as where attention gathers, and a year branch combining or clashing with a chart branch as the scale of change in daily life. The same Annual Luck reads differently for each chart. Rather than consulting a year like an oracle, use it as a prompt to ask where you would like to put more care this year.

An example of Annual Luck

The Annual Luck for 2026 is 丙午 (Bing Wu), and for 2027 it is 丁未 (Ding Wei). With a 丁 (Ding) Day Master, the 2026 stem 丙 (Bing) reads as Rival and the 2027 stem 丁 as Companion. Even once 2026 has begun, 乙巳 (Yi Si) carries on until the Start of Spring.

Common misreadings of Annual Luck

  • A common idea

A new Annual Luck starts on 1 January or at the lunar new year.

    How we read it

The calendar new year and the new year of this tradition are different things. The tradition has long treated the Start of Spring as the head of the year, and this service also changes the year at that boundary.

  • A common idea

In a good Annual Luck year, anything you try works out.

    How we read it

Annual Luck shows which themes come close in a year and promises no outcome. This service uses it only as a reference for looking back over a year and leaves decisions to your own judgment.
