2027: the Year of the Fire Goat

In the 60-year cycle of stems and branches, 2027 is 丁未 (Ding Wei), the Year of the Goat. This page sets out what those two characters are made of and the exact moment the year begins, using AevoStar's own calendar calculations. It is a calendar guide, not a forecast for the year.

2027 is a 丁未 year, the Year of the Goat

The cycle pairs ten Heavenly Stems with twelve Earthly Branches in turn, giving 60 names that repeat every 60 years. 2027 comes right after 2026's 丙午 (Bing Wu) and is number 44 in the cycle. Each branch has an animal, and the branch 未 is the Goat (also called the Sheep or Ram), so 2027 is a Goat year. The previous 丁未 year was 1967.

What 丁 and 未 are made of

The upper character, the stem 丁, belongs to Fire in the Five Elements and is yin in Yin and Yang. The lower character, the branch 未, belongs to Earth and is shown as yin on your result. Three stems are held inside 未, namely 丁, 乙 (Yi) and 己 (Ji). These are its Hidden Stems, and the main one is 己.

Read in the producing cycle of the elements, Fire on top gives rise to Earth below. The common nickname "Red Goat" or "Fire Goat" comes from the stem: 丁 is Fire, and Fire is traditionally matched with red. Elements, yin and yang, and colours are ways of sorting qualities. None of them marks a year as good or bad.

The year begins at the Start of Spring, not on Lunar New Year

In Four Pillars reading, a year begins neither on January 1 nor on Lunar New Year but at the Start of Spring (Lichun), one of the 24 solar terms. The Start of Spring is set by the Sun's position, and AevoStar computes that moment, the Solar Term Boundary, and writes it to the minute. In 2027 it falls at 10:46 on February 4 (Thu), Korea Standard Time, and from that moment we count the year as 丁未. Lunar New Year (Seollal), the first day of the first lunar month, falls on February 7 (Sun) on the Korean lunar calendar.

This year Lunar New Year comes 3 days after the Start of Spring. A baby born in between is already a Goat by the Four Pillars, though a family that counts from Lunar New Year may still call the child a Horse.

The two days differ because they follow different things. Lunar New Year is the first day of the lunar calendar, which starts each month on the day of the new moon, while the Start of Spring is the moment the Sun reaches a set point in the sky. The Start of Spring lands on much the same early-February date every year; Lunar New Year moves around the calendar far more.

If another calendar or website shows a different date or time, check which time zone it uses first. The same moment can land on a different date once it is written in another zone. Every time on this page is Korea Standard Time (UTC+9). Where published tables differ by a minute, our calculation guide explains why.

When does a 2027 baby become a Goat?

Counted by the Four Pillars, a 2027 birth is a Goat from 10:46 on February 4 (Thu), Korea time. A baby born between January 1 and that moment has the year pillar 丙午 and counts as a Horse. Goat years run until the Start of Spring 2028 (16:31 on February 4 (Fri)), when 戊申 (Wu Shen), the Monkey, begins.

For a birth on the day of the Start of Spring, the date alone can't settle it. We compare the birth time with the exact moment, and a birth in the same minute counts as the new year. Without a birth time, births in Korea are judged at noon standard time, and your result's calculation notes say so. To check from a birthday alone, try Check your zodiac animal by the Start of Spring.

Both years have a Fire stem, but 2026's 丙 is yang Fire and 2027's 丁 is yin Fire. The branch moves from Fire (午) to Earth (未), so both of 2026's characters are Fire, while 2027 has one Fire and one Earth. 午 is shown as yang, yet for Relationship Types it is read as yin, following the main stem inside it, 丁. These are differences in how each year is written. How a year reads for you depends on your own chart, so it differs from person to person.

What a 丁未 year means for you comes from laying its two characters over your Natal Chart. Reading each year's stem and branch this way is called Annual Luck. Enter your birth details and you can find 2027 in two places on your result.

  • Simple view: open "What kind of year is this" and choose the "Next year" tab. Viewed during 2026, that tab is 2027; once 2027 has begun, you'll find it under "This year".
  • Detailed view: in the "Annual Luck · from Lichun" table, the 2027 丁未 cell shows Relationship Types measured from your Day Master.

Your result is reference information drawn from traditional theory; it doesn't decide in advance what a year holds.

FAQ

What is the zodiac animal for 2027?

2027 is a 丁未 year, and its branch 未 is the Goat, so 2027 is the Year of the Goat. In the Four Pillars, though, the year counts as 丁未 from the Start of Spring at 10:46 on February 4 (Thu) (Korea time), not from January 1. A 2027 baby born before that moment has the year pillar 丙午 and counts as a Horse.

Doesn't the Goat year start on Lunar New Year?

Many families count the zodiac year from Lunar New Year, and that custom is common. The Four Pillars take the Start of Spring, set by the Sun, as the first moment of the year, and AevoStar calculates the same way. In 2027 Lunar New Year on the Korean lunar calendar is February 7 (Sun) and the Start of Spring is February 4 (Thu), so a birth between the two can be given different animals depending on which rule is used.

Why is 2027 called the Fire Goat or Red Goat?

The stem 丁 belongs to Fire in the Five Elements, and Fire is traditionally matched with red. The branch 未 is the Goat among the twelve animals. Colour and animal are easy names for the two characters and say nothing about whether the year is good or bad.

How do you see 2027 in your own chart?

Enter your birth date, time and birthplace on the input screen to get your result. In the simple view, open "What kind of year is this" and pick "Next year" (or "This year" once 2027 has begun); in the detailed view, look at the 2027 丁未 cell of the Annual Luck table. Because every natal chart is different, the same 丁未 year reads differently from person to person.

BaZi readings draw on traditional theory and are for reference only. Different schools may read the same chart differently.
